How to Get Into the University of Birmingham: 10 Things to Do

The University of Birmingham was England’s first civic university and is a founding member of the Russell Group. Its green Edgbaston campus, with its famous clock tower, is close to the centre of the UK’s second-largest city. Birmingham offers a very wide range of courses and has a large international community.

For most Birmingham courses starting in September 2027, the UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027. Here are 10 things you can do to give yourself the best chance, based on Birmingham’s own guidance. If you’re applying for a master’s or PhD instead, see the section near the end.

1. Choose your course

Birmingham’s course pages show the typical offer, any required subjects, and the English requirement. Check carefully whether your course is at the Edgbaston campus in the UK or at the University of Birmingham Dubai campus, because these are separate courses with different fees.

2. Meet the typical offer

For example, for 2027 entry, Economics BSc asks for AAA including Mathematics. Birmingham also publishes requirements for many international qualifications, and students who don’t meet them can take a foundation programme. Birmingham Economics BSc.

3. Check for tests and interviews

Most Birmingham courses don’t use an admissions test, but medicine, dentistry and some health courses use the UCAT and interviews. If you’re hoping to study medicine or dentistry, note that the UCAS deadline for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026, and you’d also have needed to sit the UCAT, so you’d now be planning for 2028 entry.

4. Write a strong personal statement

Since 2026 entry, the UCAS personal statement has been split into three questions: why this course, how your studies have prepared you, and what else you’ve done outside education. Together they must fit into 4,000 characters, and each answer needs at least 350. Birmingham wants to see real interest in your subject and evidence that you’ve explored it outside the classroom. Be specific: one book, project or problem you’ve explored in depth says more than a long list of activities.

5. Show your interests and achievements

Birmingham values students who’ll get involved in university life. In your statement, show what you’ve done outside class and how it connects to your course: volunteering, competitions, work experience, leadership or creative projects.

6. Get a strong reference

Your school’s reference and predicted grades carry real weight with Birmingham, because most offers are made before you sit your final exams. Talk to your teachers early, share what you’re planning to write in your personal statement, and make sure your predicted grades are realistic but meet the typical offer.

7. Apply by 13 January 2027

For September 2027 entry, most Birmingham courses have a UCAS equal consideration deadline of 6pm UK time on 13 January 2027. Applications sent in October and in January are treated the same, so take the time to get your personal statement and reference right. Applications close at 6pm UK time.

8. Meet the English requirement

For Economics BSc, Birmingham asks for IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading. Requirements differ between courses, so check yours. Practise with our free IELTS, TOEFL and PTE practice tests.

9. Plan your budget

For 2027 entry, home students pay £10,050 a year. International fees vary by course, and Birmingham will confirm your exact fee in your offer letter. Birmingham says the fee you pay in your first year stays the same for the rest of your course, apart from some exceptions such as clinical courses and the foundation programme. International students can’t get UK student loans, so check Birmingham’s scholarships for international students too.

10. Get ready for your Student visa

If you need a UK Student visa, Birmingham will send you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) after you’ve firmly accepted your offer and met its conditions. Apply for your visa as soon as you have it, and keep evidence that you can pay your tuition fees and living costs. The Graduate Route, which lets you work in the UK after your degree, is due to drop from two years to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. Rules can change, so always check GOV.UK.

Applying for a master’s or PhD at Birmingham?

Birmingham offers a wide range of one-year master’s degrees and PhDs, including programmes at Birmingham Business School and in engineering, computer science and the social sciences. You apply directly to the university, not through UCAS. Most programmes ask for a good first degree (often a UK upper second-class degree or the equivalent), a personal statement, references and, for international applicants, an English test. Be ambitious, but apply to a balanced list

Birmingham turns down many strong applicants every year, because there are more excellent students than places. Use your five UCAS choices wisely: apply to Birmingham if it’s right for you, and include universities where your chances are good. Information was taken from the University of Birmingham’s official course and fees pages, and checked in October 2026.
