The assessment

What is the Study Abroad Market assessment?

It’s one online assessment that looks at your studies, goals, budget and family situation. In return you get a personalised match of universities and courses, along with the career, lifestyle, family and visa information you need to decide with confidence.

We’re independent: we’re not affiliated with any university, and universities don’t pay us to recommend them.

How much does the assessment cost?

The assessment costs US$29, paid once for each assessment. There’s no subscription and nothing else to pay us.

The fee doesn’t include costs charged by others, such as university application fees, tuition fees, visa fees or currency-conversion charges.

How long does the assessment take?

About 10 minutes. You don’t have to do it all at once: choose Save and finish later and we’ll email you a link to carry on where you left off. The link works for 30 days.

What do I need to have ready?

It helps to have these to hand:

  • your personal details and date of birth
  • your education so far: qualifications, grades and where you studied
  • any test scores you have, such as IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE or GMAT
  • your work experience, if any
  • how you plan to pay for your studies
  • what and where you’d like to study

Only a few questions are required. The more you tell us, the better your match.

Do I need IELTS, TOEFL or other test scores?

No. Test scores are optional. If you already have them, add them, because they help us match you to universities and courses whose entry requirements you meet. If you haven’t taken a test yet, you can still complete the assessment.

Can I take more than one assessment?

Yes. Each assessment is separate and is charged separately at US$29. For example, you might take a second one for a different level of study, or a brother or sister might take their own.

Can I do the assessment on my phone?

Yes, it works on phones and tablets. Because there are several sections to fill in, many people find a computer or laptop easier, and you can start on one device and finish on another using the Save and finish later link.

Do I need to create an account?

Yes. You need a free account to take the assessment, so your answers are saved as you go and you can stop and pick up where you left off. It only takes your name and email address. There’s no password: we email you a one-time code each time you log in. In your account you can also follow your application and download a copy of it.

Which countries and universities do you cover?

We cover 76 study destinations and list 14,600+ universities and institutions, with QS, THE and ARWU world rankings where available. See all of them on our Countries and Universities pages.

Your report

What will my report look like?

Your report is written for you, based on your answers. It gives you:

  • Universities and courses that match your qualifications, budget and preferences
  • Career: post-study work rights and what each option could lead to
  • Lifestyle: what it’s like to live there, including typical living costs
  • Family: whether family members can join you, and on what terms
  • Visa: the student visa you’d need and its main requirements

We prepare it using our own research and database, with the help of AI tools. Please check important details, such as fees, entry requirements and visa rules, with the university or official government source before you rely on them.

How soon will I receive my report?

We’ll send you your report within 24 hours of completing your assessment.

Will an adviser contact me?

No. An adviser won’t contact you unless you’ve specifically asked us to. If you’d like to speak to someone, say so in the Anything else we should know? box at the end of the assessment, or send us a message.

Does the report guarantee I will get a place or a visa?

No. Universities make their own admission decisions, and governments decide visa applications. Your report helps you choose where to apply, but it can’t guarantee admission, a visa, a scholarship or any other outcome.

Can I download a copy of my application?

Yes. Log in to My Account with the email you used and choose Download my application. The PDF is password-protected: the password is the first three letters of your first name in small letters, followed by your date of birth as DDMMYY. For example, Maria, born 5 June 2002, would use mar050602.

Visas and family

Will you help me with my visa?

Your report includes visa information for the destinations it recommends: the type of student visa you’d need and its main requirements. You can also use our Visa page to check the requirements for your destination, course length and nationality.

We don’t apply for visas on your behalf and we don’t give immigration advice. For your actual application, use the official government website of the country, or a qualified immigration adviser.

Can my family come with me?

It depends on the country and your level of study. Each country page explains whether a partner or children can join you, and our Visa page covers dependant and family visas too. Your report includes this for the destinations it recommends.

Can I stay and work after I graduate?

Rules differ by country. Each country page sets out the post-study work options, such as the UK’s Graduate Route or Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit, and your report covers this for your recommended destinations.

Payment and refunds

How do I pay?

You pay securely through PayPal, either with your PayPal account or by debit or credit card. In most countries you can pay by card without a PayPal account. Your card details go to PayPal, not to us.

Which currency do you charge in?

The fee is charged in US dollars. If your card or PayPal account uses another currency, PayPal or your bank converts it and may add a conversion charge.

Can I get a refund?

Because your report is prepared for you, purchases are generally final and non-refundable, for example if you change your plans or disagree with the recommendations. This doesn’t affect any rights you have under the consumer laws of your country. See our terms and conditions for details.

Your data and privacy

Will my data be shared with any university or agent?

No. We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t pass it to universities or education agents. Universities don’t pay us, and a university appearing in your report doesn’t mean it receives your details.

We only share information with the service providers we need to run the site, such as our hosting, email and payment providers. If you came to us through one of our affiliates, they don’t see your name or contact details.

If we ever offer a service that involves sending your details to a university, we’ll explain it first and ask for your consent.

Is my information secure?

Yes. The whole site uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, your application is stored privately, and payments are handled by PayPal, so we never see your card details. Downloaded copies of your application are password-protected.

Can I ask you to delete my data?

Yes. You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you. Just contact us. Our privacy policy explains your rights in full.

Who runs Study Abroad Market?

Study Abroad Market (StudyAbroadMarket.com) is operated by Medicto Ltd, a company in the United Kingdom. We’re independent and not affiliated with any university.

Agents and affiliates

I’m an education agent or counsellor. Can I refer students?

Yes. Join our free affiliate programme and you’ll get your own link straight away. You earn US$15 for every paid assessment taken through it, paid by PayPal within 30 days of each assessment being paid for. There’s no minimum balance.

You can also put a whitelabel version of the assessment form on your own website, in your colours, and every assessment taken through it is credited to you.

How can I contact you?

Send us a message using our contact form and we’ll reply by email.
