TOEFL iBT is the English test most universities in the USA and Canada ask for, and it’s accepted by thousands of universities in the UK, Australia, Europe and Asia too. Booking it is expensive, so you should practise properly before test day. You don’t need to pay for practice tests to do that: ETS, the organisation that runs TOEFL, and many independent TOEFL sites offer free ones.
There’s one big catch. The TOEFL iBT changed completely on 21 January 2026, with new task types, adaptive Reading and Listening and a new 1 to 6 score scale. A lot of free TOEFL material online is still for the old test, so we’ve only included resources that cover the new format. We’ve collected 50 of them in one place, with a link to each: official ETS tests, free full mock tests, free section tests and free practice for every new task type. Some entries are a set of several tests, so in total there are far more than 50 practice tests here. Every link was checked in October 2026.
First, a quick reminder of the new TOEFL iBT format
- Reading: about 30 minutes, up to 50 items: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. It’s adaptive, so the second part gets easier or harder depending on how you did in the first.
- Listening: about 29 minutes, up to 47 items: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk. It’s adaptive too.
- Writing: about 23 minutes, 12 items: Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion.
- Speaking: about 8 minutes, 11 items: Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview.
- Scores: each section and the overall score are given on a 1 to 6 scale, in half bands. Until early 2028 you also get a comparable overall score on the old 0 to 120 scale.
- Where you take it: on a computer at a test centre, or at home with the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. ETS says to allow about two hours in total, including directions.
If a practice site still talks about the “Integrated Writing” essay or “Independent Speaking” tasks, it’s for the old test. Those tasks were removed in January 2026.

How to get the most from free TOEFL practice tests
- Check it’s the new format: before you use any practice test, check it has Complete the Words, Build a Sentence and Take an Interview. Old-format tests will train you for tasks that no longer exist.
- Start with an official test: take the ETS Interactive Sample or Full-Length Practice Test 1 first, so you know the real screens and timing.
- Practise on a computer with a headset: the test is taken on screen and the Speaking is recorded, so practise typing your Writing and speaking into a microphone.
- Don’t panic about adaptive sections: the second part of Reading and Listening may feel harder or easier. Just answer each question as well as you can.
- Get feedback on Writing and Speaking: self-checking isn’t enough. Use the free AI checks above, Write & Improve, or ask a teacher.
- Treat unofficial scores as estimates: use them to track your progress, not to predict your exact result.
Which TOEFL score do you need?
Many universities ask for an overall TOEFL score of around 80 to 100 on the old 0 to 120 scale, often with a minimum in each section. Universities are still moving their requirements to the new 1 to 6 scale, so you may see either. On ETS’s official score comparison, an old score of 86 or more is roughly a 4.5, and 95 or more is roughly a 5. Your score report shows both, so you don’t need to convert anything yourself. Always check the exact requirement on your course page. Our country guides for the USA, Canada, UK and Australia explain how studying there works. For help choosing where to apply, take our free study abroad assessment. Taking another test too? See our free IELTS, GMAT and ACT practice test guides.
