Central European University (CEU) is a private university in Vienna. It was founded in 1991 by the financier and philanthropist George Soros, and it moved its main campus from Budapest to Vienna after Hungarian legislation in 2017 restricted its academic freedom. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026, it entered at 239th in the world, making it the third-highest-ranked university in Austria. It’s known for political science, international relations, philosophy, history, legal studies and economics, and its students come from more than 150 countries.
Unlike Austria’s public universities, CEU teaches all its programmes in English, sets its own admissions rounds and charges its own tuition fees. Its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes are accredited in both the United States and Austria. Here are 10 things you can do to give yourself the best chance, based on CEU’s own guidance and official Austrian information.
1. Choose your programme
CEU offers a small number of bachelor’s programmes, such as Culture, Politics and Society and Data Science and Society, a wide range of one-year and two-year master’s programmes in the social sciences, humanities, law, public policy, economics, business and data science, and doctoral programmes. Some programmes, such as the Erasmus Mundus programmes MESPOM and Mundus MAPP, have their own admissions calendars. Check your programme’s page for its specific entry requirements before you start. 2. Pick the right admissions round
For entry in autumn 2027, CEU has four admissions rounds, with deadlines of 15 October 2026, 2 February 2027, 15 April 2027 and 15 July 2027. If you’re from a country where the visa or residence permit process takes a very long time (“visa-sensitive” countries), you can only apply in the first round. CEU’s own financial aid is only awarded in the first two rounds, and the fourth round is only for applicants who can enter Austria without a visa. So if you need a visa or want funding, aim for 15 October or, at the latest, 2 February. CEU: master’s admissions.
3. Pay the €30 application fee in time
CEU charges a non-refundable €30 application fee once per admissions cycle, however many programmes you apply to. You pay it through Flywire after you submit your first application, and your application isn’t processed until the payment arrives. As Flywire can take several days, CEU recommends paying by bank card or submitting your first application at least a week before the deadline.
4. Write your essay or academic writing yourself
Bachelor’s applicants write a short essay of no more than 500 words on a set topic for their programme. Master’s applicants upload one or more pieces of academic writing, such as a statement of purpose, research proposal or writing sample, depending on the programme. CEU expects you to prepare all written materials yourself without generative AI tools, apart from basic grammar and spelling checks, and candidates invited to interview are expected to show the same command of English as in their writing. See our 50 sample SOPs for ideas.
5. Line up your recommendation letters
Bachelor’s applicants need one confidential recommendation from a teacher or counsellor, and master’s applicants need two, from academics or work supervisors who know you well. You register your referees in the online application form, and they get a link to submit their letter once you’ve submitted your application. The letters must arrive within one week, so ask your referees well in advance. If you apply to more than one programme, each application needs its own full set of recommendations.
6. Prove your English
You must prove your English unless English is your first language or you studied in English, for example in a degree taught only in English for master’s applicants. CEU accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, Euroexam Academic English C1 and the Duolingo English Test, and most results must be no more than two years old. Check your programme’s minimum scores. Practise with our free IELTS and TOEFL practice tests.
7. Prepare for an interview and any extra tests
Most departments interview shortlisted candidates before making a final decision, so be ready to talk about your academic interests, your plans and why you’ve chosen CEU. Bachelor’s applicants are encouraged, but not required, to send a standardised maths result such as the SAT, ACT, AP Calculus, A-levels or IB Maths, and some master’s programmes in the Department of Economics require a GRE or GMAT score. Practise with our free GRE and GMAT practice tests.
8. Understand the fees and apply for financial aid
CEU’s bachelor’s tuition fee is €8,000 a year. For 2025-26, most master’s programmes cost €12,000 a year, with higher fees for some, such as €14,500 for the Master of Public Administration and €15,000 for the MS in Business Analytics and AI. You also pay a €200 enrolment fee a year, the Austrian Students’ Union fee of €26.20 a semester, and a non-refundable registration fee (usually €500) when you accept your place, which counts towards your first tuition payment. CEU’s financial aid is based on academic merit and open to applicants from any country: bachelor’s students can get partial tuition awards of up to 50% (€4,000 a year), and master’s students can get tuition awards covering 50% to 80% of the fee and stipends of €300 to €750 a month. To be considered, tick the funding section in the application form and apply in round 1 or 2. CEU tuition and fees.
9. Apply for your residence permit early
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens don’t need a visa or residence permit to study in Austria, but they must register their address after they arrive. If you’re from outside the EU/EEA and will stay for more than six months, you need a “Residence Permit – Student” (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student). In most cases you apply for it in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country once CEU has sent your letter of admission. For 2026 you must show €722.58 a month if you’re under 24, or €1,308.39 a month if you’re 24 or older, for twelve months in advance, plus extra if your rent is more than €386.43 a month. You’ll also need proof of accommodation, health insurance and a police clearance certificate, and the application fee is €218. The authorities have 90 days to decide, so Austria’s agency for education and internationalisation (OeAD) advises applying at least three months before you travel, and six months ahead if you can. Once your permit is approved, you get a D visa to enter Austria and collect it. It’s issued for 12 months, and to renew it you must show academic progress of at least 16 ECTS credits a year. OeAD: Residence Permit – Student.
10. Plan for work during and after your studies
With a student residence permit you can work up to 20 hours a week, but your employer must first get a work permit for you from the Public Employment Service (AMS), which is granted without a labour market test. Many part-time jobs need German, so don’t count on them to pay all your costs. After you graduate, you can extend your stay by twelve months to look for a job or set up a business, as long as you apply before your student residence permit expires, and if you find a job that matches your qualifications you can apply for a Red-White-Red Card. CEU’s career services can help you find internships and jobs. EU Immigration Portal: studying in Austria.
Applying for a PhD at CEU?
Doctoral applicants who apply by the financial aid deadline are automatically considered for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship, which covers the full tuition fee and pays a stipend of €2,002 a month (gross) for 48 months. The stipend is taxable in Austria. Apply in the first round, and use your research proposal to show a clear, well-focused project. See our 50 sample SOPs and free GRE practice tests.
