The University of Auckland (Waipapa Taumata Rau) was founded in 1883 and is New Zealand’s largest and highest-ranked university. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026, it was 67th in the world and first in New Zealand. Its main City Campus is in central Auckland, the country’s biggest city, and it’s known for engineering, business, law, medicine and health sciences, and the sciences.
Admission to most undergraduate programmes is based on your school results, and many programmes guarantee you a place if you reach a published score. Here are 10 things you can do to give yourself the best chance, based on the University of Auckland’s own guidance and official New Zealand government information.
1. Choose your programme and check its guaranteed score
Each programme publishes a “rank score” that guarantees entry if you also meet University Entrance and any subject requirements. For 2027 entry, the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) guarantees a place with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma score of 32, with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level, or a Cambridge International rank score of 300 with A Levels in Mathematics and Physics. The Bachelor of Commerce asks for an IB score of 27 or a Cambridge rank score of 200. If your score is a little lower, you can still apply, and Auckland will consider you if places remain.
2. Check how your country’s qualifications are assessed
If you’re studying a school qualification from outside New Zealand, Auckland publishes the results it expects for the qualifications its international students most often hold. You must meet these to get an offer, or be on track to meet them for a conditional offer. Some programmes also need a portfolio, an audition, an interview or references. If your results aren’t high enough for direct entry, a foundation programme with one of Auckland’s partners is another route in.
3. Apply before the closing date
For Semester One 2027, which starts on 1 March 2027, most undergraduate programmes, including Arts, Commerce, Engineering and Science, close on 8 December 2026. Some close earlier: Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy and Medical Imaging closed on 1 July 2026, and the Bachelor of Nursing closes on 1 November 2026 for international applicants. Late applications are accepted for most programmes if places remain, but apply as early as you can so you have time to get your visa. University of Auckland: undergraduate closing dates.
4. Submit your application and documents
You apply online through Auckland’s application portal, either by yourself or through a registered agent. If you apply yourself with a school qualification from outside New Zealand, there’s a one-off application fee of NZ$85 (NZ$100 if your highest qualification is from a university), which you pay only once however many programmes you apply for. Within two working days, you’ll get an email listing the documents Auckland needs, and a decision usually follows within four weeks of receiving them, although it can take longer between September and January.
5. Meet the English requirement
The minimum for undergraduate study is IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 80 with a writing score of 21, although some programmes ask for more. You must reach the score in a single sitting, but Auckland accepts IELTS One Skill Retake taken within 60 days of your original test. Citizens of Canada, Ireland, Singapore, the UK and the US are usually exempt. If you’re waiting for your result, you can still get a conditional offer. Test results are usually valid for two years. 6. Take the right subjects at school
Several programmes need specific subjects, so check them before your final year. Engineering, for example, needs Mathematics and Physics at A Level or IB Higher Level for guaranteed entry, although Auckland may consider strong results at AS Level or IB Standard Level (Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, not Applications and Interpretation). For Medicine, international students usually start with the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Biomedical Science and then compete for a small number of places in the second year of the medical programme.
7. Apply for scholarships early
Most international scholarships require you to hold an offer first. International master’s students with an offer by 20 October 2026 were invited on 21 October to apply for the International Student Excellence Scholarship (25 per cent of first-year tuition) for Semester One 2027, with a closing date of 4 November 2026. There are also High Achievers Scholarships for master’s students from China, India, Indonesia, the US and Vietnam. For undergraduates, the International School Leaver Scholarship gives up to NZ$20,000 to international students who attended a New Zealand secondary school. Write your personal statement yourself; Auckland asks you not to use AI. See our 50 sample SOPs for ideas.
8. Understand the fees
For 2027, Auckland’s estimated international fees for a full year of study (120 points) are NZ$42,236.40 for most Arts courses, NZ$51,020.40 for Commerce, NZ$49,581.60 to NZ$60,909.60 for Science and NZ$60,909.60 for Engineering (Honours). On top of this, there’s a Student Services Fee of NZ$9.65 a point, about NZ$1,158 a year. Fees usually rise each year, and Auckland is New Zealand’s most expensive city for rent, so budget carefully. 9. Accept your offer and apply for your student visa
Once you’ve accepted your offer of place from the University of Auckland, you can apply online for a Fee Paying Student Visa, which costs from NZ$850 and can be issued for up to four years. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) asks you to apply at least three months before you travel, because October to March is its busiest period. You’ll need to show that you’ve paid your tuition fees for one year (or for the whole course, if it’s shorter), although if you apply from outside New Zealand you can wait to pay until INZ approves your visa in principle. You must also show at least NZ$20,000 for each year of study for your living costs, or have an acceptable sponsor, as well as medical and travel insurance for your whole stay, and you may need a chest X-ray and police certificates. You can apply with a conditional offer, but you’ll need an unconditional offer before your visa can be granted. Immigration New Zealand: Fee Paying Student Visa.
10. Plan for work during and after your studies
Most student visas let you work up to 25 hours a week during term and full-time in scheduled holidays. Since 1 April 2026, the adult minimum wage has been NZ$23.95 an hour. After graduating, you can apply once for a Post-Study Work Visa, which gives you open work rights for up to three years. A master’s or doctoral degree, if you studied in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks, gives you three years, and a bachelor’s degree usually gives you a visa as long as the time you spent studying for it. You must apply within three months of your student visa expiring (six months after a doctorate) and show at least NZ$5,000 to support yourself. From 16 November 2026, Indian graduates with a New Zealand PhD will be able to get a visa of up to four years under the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. Jobs on the Green List of occupations in demand can lead to residence. The University of Auckland’s careers service can help you find part-time work, internships and graduate jobs. Applying for a master’s or PhD at Auckland?
Master’s programmes have their own closing dates and entry requirements, usually based on your grade point average, and the High Achievers and Excellence scholarships expect a grade point equivalent of at least 7.0 out of 9. For a PhD, you’ll need to agree a topic with a supervisor first, and you can apply for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. International doctoral students who live in New Zealand currently pay the same tuition fees as New Zealand students, which makes a PhD here unusually affordable, but check the current rules, because this policy can change.
