How to Get Into Heidelberg University: 10 Things to Do

Heidelberg University (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg), founded in 1386, is Germany’s oldest university. It was ranked 86th in the world and third in Germany in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It’s especially known for medicine, the life sciences, physics and the humanities, and it’s at the heart of one of Germany’s best-known university towns, on the River Neckar.

Heidelberg is in Baden-Württemberg, the German state that charges tuition fees to most students from outside the EU, and most of its bachelor’s programmes are taught in German. Here are 10 things you can do to give yourself the best chance, based on Heidelberg University’s own guidance and official German government information.

1. Choose your programme and check its language

Most of Heidelberg’s bachelor’s and state examination programmes, such as medicine and law, are taught in German. At master’s level, there are more programmes taught in English, for example in scientific computing, transcultural studies, cultural heritage and South Asian studies. Check the language of teaching and the entry requirements for each programme you like.

2. Check that your qualifications give you access

Not every school-leaving certificate gives direct access to a German university. Check yours in the DAAD admission database. If it doesn’t qualify you for direct entry, you may need to attend a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) first. For a master’s, your bachelor’s degree must match the programme’s subject requirements, which are set by each department.

3. Apply in the 1 June to 15 July window

For a first-semester undergraduate programme, applicants from outside the EU and EEA with a foreign school-leaving certificate apply between 1 June and 15 July for the winter semester. Many programmes, including medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, start only in the winter semester. You apply online and, if you’re admitted, enrol through the heiCO portal by the deadline in your letter of admission. Heidelberg undergraduate application deadlines.

4. Check your master’s programme’s own deadline

Each master’s programme sets its own application process and dates. Some don’t have a fixed deadline but strongly recommend that non-EU applicants apply by mid-June, so there’s time for the visa process. Start early, and if you hold a degree from China, India or Vietnam, get your APS certificate from the German embassy in good time, because some Heidelberg programmes, such as the Transcultural Studies master’s, require it.

5. Prove your German at DSH-2 level

For programmes taught in German, Heidelberg asks for the German language university entrance exam (DSH) at level 2 or an equivalent certificate, such as TestDaF with good results. If you don’t have it when you apply, you must usually present it by the time you enrol. Start learning German early, because lectures, reading and exams will all be in German.

6. Show strong grades

Places in subjects such as medicine and psychology are very limited and are allocated mainly on grades. Your foreign grades are converted into the German scale, so a strong record across your subjects helps. For master’s programmes, your grades and the modules you’ve taken in your bachelor’s are key.

7. Write a strong motivation letter

Many Heidelberg master’s programmes ask for a letter of motivation, a CV and sometimes references or a writing sample. Explain why you’ve chosen this programme, what you’ve studied so far and how it fits your plans. For English-taught programmes, you’ll usually need English at C1 level, shown by a test such as IELTS or TOEFL. See our 50 sample SOPs and practise with our free IELTS and TOEFL practice tests.

8. Budget for Baden-Württemberg’s tuition fee

Students from outside the EU and EEA with a foreign school-leaving certificate pay a tuition fee of €1,500 a semester for bachelor’s, state examination and consecutive master’s programmes. EU and EEA citizens, and international students with a German school-leaving certificate, are exempt, as are some other groups. On top of this, all students pay the semester fee, which was €189.80 for winter semester 2026/27. Heidelberg tuition fees for international students.

9. Apply for a fee exemption or scholarship

Heidelberg can exempt up to 5% of its international students from the tuition fee, and the deadline to apply is 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester. Also look at the DAAD scholarship database, the Deutschlandstipendium and scholarships from your own government. Heidelberg is a small city with high demand for housing, so apply for student accommodation as soon as you’re admitted.

10. Plan your visa and your move to Heidelberg

If you’re from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, you’ll usually need a national student visa from the German embassy or consulate in your country. Book your appointment early, because waiting times can be long. You’ll need to show that you can support yourself: in 2026, that meant €11,904 for the first year (€992 a month), usually paid into a blocked account (Sperrkonto), and your embassy may also ask for proof that you can pay your tuition fees. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam also need an APS certificate. After you arrive, you register your address and apply for a residence permit at the local foreigners’ office. International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, and after you graduate you can usually get a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a job. Rules change, so check the German embassy in your country and the DAAD for the latest advice.

Applying for a PhD at Heidelberg?

To do a doctorate at Heidelberg, you usually need a supervisor who agrees to take you on and acceptance by your faculty, either individually or through a structured graduate school. Heidelberg also works closely with nearby research institutes, such as the German Cancer Research Center and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. Contact potential supervisors early with a clear research proposal.
