Visa requirements

  • National (D) visa if your nationality needs one, then a student residence permit (B) from the canton
  • Admission letter from a Swiss university and a study plan
  • Proof of funds: about CHF 21,000 a year (varies by canton), usually in an account with a Swiss-authorised bank
  • Commitment to leave Switzerland after your studies
  • Swiss health insurance (or an approved exemption) after arrival
  • Work up to 15 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays, but only after 6 months in Switzerland

Work permit after studies

  • 6-month non-renewable permit to look for a job after graduating from a Swiss university
  • Employers can hire graduates in fields of high scientific or economic interest without proving that no Swiss/EU candidate is available
  • Work permits for non-EU nationals are subject to annual quotas

Citizenship route

  • Settlement permit (C) usually after 10 years of residence for non-EU nationals (5 years for US and Canadian citizens)
  • Ordinary naturalisation requires a C permit and 10 years of residence; years between ages 8 and 18 count double
  • Local language and integration requirements set by the canton and commune

Family details

  • Students can apply to bring a spouse and dependent children
  • You must have suitable housing and enough funds to support them, which is hard to show on a student budget
  • Cantons decide, and a spouse's right to work isn't automatic
