Visa requirements

  • Letter of Acceptance to Study issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education (your university applies for it)
  • Long-stay study visa (D/SD) from a Romanian consulate, then a temporary residence permit for studies from the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI)
  • Proof of funds for living costs (at least €2,500 in your account is commonly required) and tuition paid for the first year
  • Medical insurance, proof of accommodation and a criminal record certificate
  • Work up to 4 hours a day without a work authorisation

Work permit after studies

  • Graduates of Romanian institutions can extend their stay for work if they have a full-time job contract related to their studies, without needing a separate work authorisation in many cases
  • EU rules also allow time to stay after graduating to look for work; check current conditions with IGI

Citizenship route

  • Long-term residence after 5 years of continuous legal residence (time as a student counts half)
  • Citizenship after 8 years of legal residence (5 if married to a Romanian citizen), with Romanian language, culture and constitution knowledge

Family details

  • You can apply for family reunification for your spouse (if you married before getting your right to reside) and minor children
  • You must show enough income and accommodation for them
  • Approvals for students are discretionary, so allow extra time
