Visa requirements

  • National (D) visa and/or a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) for studies, applied for via the MIGRIS system, VFS Global or a Lithuanian embassy
  • Admission letter from a Lithuanian institution, usually with proof the first year's tuition is paid
  • Proof of sufficient funds for living costs and accommodation
  • Health insurance
  • Students with a TRP for study can work (part-time limits may apply)

Work permit after studies

  • Temporary residence permit for 12 months after graduating to look for a job or start your own business
  • Then switch to a work-based TRP or EU Blue Card

Citizenship route

  • Permanent residence usually after 5 years of continuous residence, with Lithuanian language and constitution exams
  • Citizenship by naturalisation after 10 years of residence in Lithuania, holding a permanent residence permit when you apply
  • Dual citizenship is generally not allowed

Family details

  • Family reunification usually requires the sponsor to have lived in Lithuania for at least 2 years with a TRP valid for at least 1 more year, so most new students can't bring family straight away
  • PhD students and some other categories may be exempt; check with the Migration Department
